Hubspot is a leading inbound marketing, sales, and customer service software provider that launched in 2006. This year it recorded over $200mm in Q2 revenue and announced a new end-to-end sales hub product line. For a company that has seen such success and continued growth during a global pandemic, it comes as no surprise that Hubspot has also stepped up its advertising on podcasts. In fact from August 2020 to September 2020, Magellan AI detected a 580% increase in ad dollars spent. …

For monday.com, this led to immense growth, evidenced by the fact the company’s valuation has doubled as of May 2020. NBC Universal hit a milestone this year with Peacock, an all new streaming service that launched on July 15. Magellan AI first detected ads for Peacock in July 2020, but in just one month we estimate that NBC Universal spent $668k across 69 shows to promote the service and its shows. Compared to competitors during the month of the launch of their streaming services, NBC universal spent 133% more than Quibi ($193,000) during their launch in April 2020 and 153% more than HBO during their launch of HBO Max ($153,000) in May 2020. …

If you haven’t already, take a look at our first article, where we started our series by analyzing which categories of advertisers were up and which were down during the broadcast week of 3/16. In this piece we look at how the weeks since have shaped up.

Methodology

To establish a baseline, we identified advertisers who were detected on shows that have consistently ranked as a top 3,000 podcast every week since the beginning of January. We calculated the average weekly spend for each advertiser and industry during the months of January and February, and compared that to the average weekly spend during the weeks of 3/23, 3/30 and 4/6. …

We were recently approached by a major telecom interested in testing the podcast ad market. Aside from understanding which shows and genres their competitors were on and their estimated budgets, they were especially keen to understand what level of brand safety they could ensure in the often colorful world of off-the-cuff show hosts and guests.

Magellan AI has the world’s largest database of podcast advertiser data. To demonstrate how they could avoid advertising on shows that use offensive language (see George Carlin’s “7 words you can’t say on TV” for a primer), we ran keyword searches scanning the transcripts of over 24,000 podcast episodes. They came away from that with a list of shows and networks that they would need to be cautious of and another to use as a starter to build a media plan. …
